iam Howlett is the brain of the music. All tracks are written, mixed and for the most part produced by him (Liam is the Prodigy). His dad forced him to take piano lessons from the age of six.His interest in music started already in primary school. When he started secondary school,he was a big hip-hop fan.But Liam wanted to perform his own material.A couple of years later,he got a holiday job and he earned enough cash to buy two cheap turntables.Soon after that,he approached a local hip-hop band called "Cut to Kill".They worked hard and two years later,Liam was offered Ј4000 to record their debut album.

Mistakenly, the whole budget was spent in the studio leaving nothing for promotion or touring. To compound matters, the rest of the band signed to "Tam Tam Records" behind Liam's back. The deal exclude him from the band.Liam was not happy because he knew that they had used his tracks to win the contract. But he still was a hip-hop fan until a knife was pulled on him at London's Subterania because he "didn't fit in" (he was white). After that incident,he began looking for a new music style. It was the summer of 1988.Liam's first experience of rave culture was at a party at the Barn in Rayne. He was totally converted:"I thought it was the bollocks, such a different experience from what I had become used to".Hip-hop was such an exclusivist, pretentious scene and to a certain extent,it always excluded white bands. Then to experience something like that first night at the Barn was such a stark contrast."I really loved the music and the whole vibe.I had never been into dancing that much, but it didn't matter because you could enjoy it.You didn't have to dance properly".A couple of months later,Liam had started DJ-ing in these parties and became a well-known face on the Essex scene. However,he was still too shy to play any of the material he had secretly been writing.
